Shana James

Shana James is an artist and printmaker with a lifelong interest in visual storytelling. With over 30 years of experience in creating and exhibiting, her work is inspired by classical fairy tales, poetry, dreams, and the natural world. Her imagery brings together human and animal figures in unexpected, fantastical settings, offering a poetic reflection on contemporary life. Through the interplay of the mundane and the meaningful, her work invites viewers to rediscover the mystery and wonder present in even the most ordinary life.

James is known for her Alice in Wonderland inspired works which use the story as a critical lens to explore ideas to do with choices, decision making and self-actualisation.

She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from Curtin University (1989) and a Master of Arts in Visual Art from Edith Cowan University (2021). Her work is held in recognised collections, including those of Kerry Stokes, Artbank, The West Australian Ministry for Culture and the Arts and Monash University. In addition to her artistic practice, James lectures in Printmaking Studio Practice at Curtin University and North Metropolitan TAFE.
