When painting plein air I find each place has its own smell. This unique aroma is decided by the mixture of minerals in the soil, the temperature, season, altitude and the level of moisture in the ground. This also determines the type of flora and colours that are present in the landscape. Oddly, scent plays a subconscious, yet pivotal role in defining the colour palette I'll work with and sets the overall mood of the painting.
