'INTO THE PINK' - Group Exhibition

13-May-2023 - 17-June-2023

‘in the peak of health or an optimal state’

The colour pink is said to represent universal love, of oneself and of others. Pink symbolises friendship, affection, harmony, inner peace, and approachability. Pink is the colour of optimism – heralding good times.

It is in the above sense that the colour pink was felt to be significant for the first exhibition at the new iteration of Stala Contemporary gallery.

At the same time though, there is the acknowledgement that pink is ambiguous and fluid in its usage and meaning for individuals. Pink can be polarising, used socio-culturally to stereotype, by being associated with weakness, gender, and other discriminators. Yet pink has also recently come to symbolise power and hope for many groups of the community.

Arguments abound about colour in general and particularly where sections of science say it is not actually a property of light, or of objects that reflect light, but is inside our heads as sensation, and not out there as a ‘thing’.

With all this in mind the 17 invited Australian and international artists for this inaugural exhibition at the new gallery space were asked to work around how they FEEL pink in themselves, whether it is a common colour in their work or not.
